Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the country now stands tall as an emerging power on the global maritime map owing to deep structural reforms in the maritime economy.

At the inaugural session of the Indian Maritime Week 2025 here, he said the country’s naval strength as well as its location is evident from the nation’s coastline which is over 11,000 km long, with 13 coastal states and Union territories, while it also possesses an exclusive economic zone.

Shah remarked that the summit will be a platform for bringing together and brainstorming ideas that will transform the Gateway of India, into the Gateway of the World.

“Today this moment of the India Maritime Summit is the maritime moment of the nation, where through this summit brainstorming will be done to convert Gateway of India into Gateway of the World,” he said.

The minister mentioned that the maritime summit has proven how the country, over the past decade, based on structural reforms in the sector, has emerged as a powerful emerging power.

According to Shah, the maritime business contributes a large part to the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the nation’s economy.

The summit, HM said, is opening opportunities for the global investors, while the country on the basis of its maritime situation, democratic stability and with the capability is playing the role of a bridge between the Indo Pacific and the Global South.

This is also giving speed to things like development, security and environment awareness.

He emphasized that the country’s naval history is very old, and the historical evidence of India’s maritime history dates back to as old as 5,000 years.

According to the home minister, representatives coming from more than a hundred nations in the summit here prove that India’s maritime tradition till date remains the focal point for global partnership and regional stability.

Shah has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maritime vision is based on three pillars — security, stability and self-reliance.

He added that the Indian Ports Bill 2025 has also been passed, which is as per the current scenario.
